Pennsylvania - Gov. Tom Corbett is on the right track on prison reform. Last year, the Corbett administration dropped plans to build a 2,000-bed prison in Fayette County. Now Corbett's Secretary of Corrections John Wertzel has announced that making the parole process more efficient will allow the Pennsylvania's prison system to reduce its inmate population by 2,500.

VIRGINIA - The overuse of solitary confinement concerns some members of the Virginia legislature. According to Senator Adam Ebbin and Delegates Charniele Herring and Patrick Hope, there are simply too many prisoners in solitary for too long.

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- Willie Thomas Morris left the federal prison at Talladega a free man on Nov. 8 after having served about two-thirds of a nine-year and two-month sentence for his conviction on gun and crack cocaine charges.

"His family was very happy to have him back home, especially before the holidays," said Scott Brower, the Birmingham lawyer who had represented Morris after he was charged.
